The French horn player Henri Chaussier was at first an ardent defender of the natural horn. After a trip to Germany where he had to play the valve horn, realising the difficulties of playing the instrument, he had the idea of a non-transposing horn. In association with the wind instrument maker François Millereau at the end of the 1880s he developed an “omnitonic” horn. Saint-Saëns allowed Chaussier to highlight the specific qualities of his omnitonic instrument by writing for him the Morceau de concert, op.94. This edition is part of Musique française, a series designed for students and teachers as well as professionals; and offers a historical introduction by Edmond Lemaître and performance suggestions by Daniel Catalanotti. The score is notated for horn in C while the separate part is notated for a transposing horn in F
