The publication of this volume is both an overdue act of justice for the violinist Francesco Sfilio, who died almost forgotten in the 1970’s, and an event destined to have a great impact on the future of violin teaching. Sfilio’s lively yet deeply considered book encapsulates the experience and awareness of a distinguished academic and teacher of the violin, but it is above all an exposition of the principles, foundations and secrets of Paganini’s violin technique, as Sfilio was a direct pupil of Camillo Sivori, Paganini’s only disciple. When we also consider the light these writings shed on the cultural context within which this technique developed, their importance becomes even more evident. This landmark work is aimed mainly at students and teachers of the violin, but will be of great interest to all devotees of the instrument. The Italian Finance Ministry has authorized only a limited number of copies to be printed, numbered from 1 to 2000.
